The Eighth Day of Christmas

Wednesday, January 1, 2019

Dale and I brought Mom to the latest Star Wars movie this afternoon. There were some scenes with Carrie Fisher that were a bit emotional and made even more so due to her passing. Mom mentioned that she felt like she was right back in the theater in 1977 when the scrolling words popped up on the screen during the opening. Dale and I agreed. Time just seems to melt away.

Christmas Season 2017/2018 - Fondue with Mom

Monday, January 1, 2018
We weren't able to do fondue with Mom on Christmas Eve this year so we instead did it today after seeing The Last Jedi at the Southdale theater. It was divine. I stirred the cheese while she looked on and added the Kirche while referring to the book she's used for years for the recipe. The page is splattered with cheese and oil and who knows what other remnants of food.  I checked to copyright date of the cook book and it dates to 1969.  We usually have steak after the cheese fondue but today we had salmon prepared by Dale. It too was divine.

Christmas Season 2017/2018 - New Year's Day: The Last Jedi

Dale and I took Mom to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi today. It was a fun movie and so wonderful yet wistful to see Carrie Fisher on the big screen. Interesting to see her last night in When Harry Met Sally which was made nearly 30 years ago. I find it  tragic she's gone. Her wit, wisdom, humor, and beauty will be missed.

New Year's Day 2016 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens

New Year's Day 2016

For the Christmas season a neighbor family has had this on display:

Funny because I've been planning to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens with Mom today. It was quite a bit of fun in and of itself but also because I remember going as a family back in 1977 to see the first one. It was such a trip to see the original cast back up on the big screen again and I don't care what the haters say, I thought Carrie Fisher looked fantastic.

When the movie was over, Mom turned to the 20-something sitting next to her and said with excitement  "I took him to see the original back in 1977." I giggled with glee but the gal looked back at Mom with a blank expression.

In the car Mom leaned over and referenced the interaction saying, "I don't think young people who've grown up watching videos of the movies can understand how exciting it was to watch the original on the big screen for the first time."

Nope, they can't. I can't forget the warm early June night when Mom, Dad, Sam, and I went to see it suburban Minneapolis. We had no idea what to expect. No idea.

A neighbor family has this on display in their backyard. I'm planning on seeing the new Star Wars with Mom on New Year's Day.
