Holiday Season 2019 - A Christmas Story & The Shark's Tooth Tiki Bar

Friday, November 29, 2019

Lunch with cousin Leo today. We had a wonderful time visiting with him. After lunch Pete and Steph had to go to work so Mom and I stayed home with the kids. We watched Christmas Story which Abby, Xander, and Emma had never seen before. They seemed to really like it.

After the movie we had dinner and then opened up the tiki bar Abby set up. Abby and I made up a tiki drink just for the evening. The beverage was made with about a third of an average sized tub of rainbow sherbet, one cup of Hawaiian Punch, and one cup of pineapple juice all stirred together. We divided it into 5 glasses and then topped each glass off with ginger ale. It turned out great and it was enjoyed by all!

By the way, Emma named the drink the Shark Bite and I named the tiki bar the Shark's Tooth Tiki Lounge.

Christmas Season 2017/2018 - 12th Night

Friday, January 5, 2018
Twelfth Night.
Lit a fire in the "fireplace." Dale and I both found it very relaxing.
Athena seemed to like it too.

We sang some Christmas songs with the t.v.
Made cocktails and had a simple dinner of frozen pizza.

And watched Elf.  Will Ferrell is awesome in the lead. I get a kick out of it when Buddy answers the phone and says, "Buddy the Elf. What's your favorite color?"

I didn't realize until this most recent viewing that Peter Billingsley from A Christmas Story plays the head elf at Santa's workshop. Clever casting.

The first time I saw the movie (only a few years ago) I didn't realize it was Zooey Deschanel playing the apple of Buddy's eye. The blonde hair threw me off. It wasn't until she sang Baby It's Cold Outside with her unmistakeable voice that I realized it was her.

Yes, we watched A Christmas Story for the umpteenth time and it was as funny and endearing as it always is.

Christmas Season 2013/2014 - A Christmas Story

Dale and I watched A Christmas Story this evening. Way back in 1983 during Christmas break, my brother Sam and I hiked over to the Boulevard Theater on Lyndale Avenue to go see A Christmas Story. The Boulevard was a second run theater and it only cost 99 cents to get in. I had seen a review for this movie on Siskal and Ebert and thought it looked intriguing. Sam and I roared with laughter through the movie but after this initial viewing I never heard about it again. During one Thanksgiving in the mid-90s ('94 or '95) Dale and I were visiting Brenda and Irv for Thanksgiving and I came across the movie on cable TV. Whatever channel was showing it was doing a 24 hour marathon. I called Dale's attention to it and he had never heard of it before. He fell in love with it so we purchased a copy and have been watching it every year since.
