Christmas Season 2024/2025: The Seventh Day of Christmas - New Year's Eve

Tuesday, December 31, 2024

Time to wrap this year up. Dale and I went to the downtown Lifetime this morning to do weights. This is something I’d like to be better about in the New Year.

Went to The Howe for lunch. I had an Old Fashioned. Hoping to cut down on calories and booze in the New Year. I haven’t been bad about those things this year but I could be better.

After lunch we stopped at Lund's to pick up makings for dinner. We’re having Mike and Charisse over tonight and Dale wants to make his awesome oven baked spaghetti.

Mike and Charisse arrived at about 5:45. They each brought some house shoes to wear inside instead of their boots. Mike showed us some slip-on lace-less sneakers he got as an assignment from a student years ago. The assignment was to make a craft related to a piece of literature and this particular student painted a different character from the story on each shoe along with some quotations from the book. I wasn’t familiar with the story but the shoes sure looked cool.

I showed them my craft of Peeps and sugar in a clear jar. I made it last year with the Christmas tree peep and this year I added the gingerbread man peep. This is about as craftsy as I get.

Mike and I stepped outside to shelter in the garage while we each smoked an Oliva. It was nice to catch up as I haven’t seen him for a couple months.

After cigars Mike and I joined Dale and Charisse inside for appetizers. Charisse brought some smoked salmon from Ingebretsen’s which we had on crackers. It was delicious. Spaghetti for dinner and chocolate bundt cake and ice cream for dessert. It was nice to just sit around and talk. We didn't make it until midnight but we made it to 10:30. Not bad for people growing older.

[Added New Year's Day] Dale wrote the following on his blog: "We had one of Joe's high school friends and his wife over for NYE last night.  It's become kind of a tradition to spend New Year's Eve with them and we absolutely enjoy their company. They're the kind of people who make you comfortable just being yourself.  We talk about anything and everything.  Since we hosted this year, I made a Brian Lagerstrom spaghetti dish that was several steps above your standard spaghetti dish and I had to say it was bangin'.  Super deep flavor in the sauce and with a real kick.  We just sat around the table the whole evening and before we knew it it was 10:30 and well past everyone's bed time.  I haven't made it to midnight in several years, but we almost made it to 11:00 (Central time) so actually did make it to the eastern time zone's new years anyway."

Christmas Season 2023/2024 - 7th Day of Christmas Part 3: New Year's Eve

The 7th Day of Christmas

After cocktails Dale and I ate dinner. We had baked chicken breast with roasted broccoli and buttered spaghetti noodles.

We watched When Harry Met Sally which culminates in a scene taking place on NYE. Dale's never really liked this movie before but this time he said he actually enjoyed it. He stayed awake for the whole thing this time so that probably helped.

Leftover pumpkin pie from Christmas for dessert.

I changed into my robe. Sylvester climbed up on my lap.

Had we gone out I'd like to think this would have been my outfit.

However, going out was not how it unfolded this year. It was a quiet and laid back New Year's Eve at home and we were in bed my 10:00. Who knows what 2024 will bring. The 2020s have so far turned out to be a turbulent decade. A couple years ago I gave up saying the new year couldn't be any worse than the previous. I guess one can only plan for tomorrow but live for today. I've tried to live by that little nugget of wisdom in the past but going forward I'm going to really try to put even more of the emphasis on the live for today part.

The 7th Day of Christmas

The overnight snow accumulated a little bit. It's not that it hasn't felt like Christmas this season but now it actually looks more like Christmas.

Dale and I went to brunch at Creekside today. After that we went to Lunds to pick up food for dinner.

Had a couple Macanudos this afternoon while Dale took a nice walk.

Came inside for cocktails with Dale (but first changed into my velvety blue blazer) and we listened to more of my Christmas playlists.

Christmas Season 2023/2024 - 7th Day of Christmas Part 1: The House by the Poppy Field

The 7th Day of Christmas

Recently finished reading The House by the Poppy Field by Marjorie Bowen. It's another title from Seth's Ghost Stories for Christmas series.

According to the teaser on the back of the book, "After having lived a largely solitary life, Maitland returns to his ancestral estate and soon finds himself increasingly obsessed with the magnificent field of poppies surrounding the home - as well as the man harvesting them."

Along with the harvester a couple of other mysterious figures appear but, are they all really there?

Christmas Season 2022/2023 - 7th Day of Christmas: NYE with Mike and Charisse

Friday, December 31, 2022

Mike and Charisse had us over for dinner tonight. They served fondue which was a blast since Mom hasn't done it for a couple years now.

We had cocktails by the fireplace to start.

Dinner include and oil fondue with shrimp and beef, a cheese fondue with bread and ham, and chocolate fondue with fruit, potato chips, and some pizzelles which we brought over.

After dinner we moved back to the fireplace and engaged in some more wonderful conversation.

Christmas Season 2022/2023 - 7th Day of Christmas: Hanging with Sylvester

Friday, December 31, 2022

Mike and Charisse invited us over for New Year's Eve tonight. Having a Bloody Mary before heading over. Dale and I are doing a dry-January starting tomorrow so I'm trying to finish up the little bit of vodka I have left.

Hanging out with Sylvester before until we leave.

Christmas Season 2022/2023 - 6th Day of Christmas: Chrissy

Friday, December 30, 2022

Noel's annual holiday gathering occurred as usual this year. Sadly Stephen was ill this year and not able to make it. We carried on without his but it wasn't quite as fun.

I told a ghost story that was a mash up of The Clown Statue and The Bloody Finger, I thought it was fun.

Christmastide 2021/2022 - 7th Day of Christmas: New Year's Eve Cigar

Friday, December 31, 2021

Took a walk with a Macanudo ascot this afternoon.

It was fantastic.

Christmastide 2021/2022 - 7th Day of Christmas: The Joe and Noel Post Holiday Shopping Adventure

Friday, December 31, 2021

Our annual hitting of the sales was rescheduled from this past Tuesday. Noel picked me up at 11:00 a.m. and we headed straight to Victory. I got a couple of snowman garlands. Very charming. Noel got a cool wreath.

We headed to George and the Dragon at 50th and Bryant for lunch. Stopped at Patina afterward. Nuthin'.

So different from the old days when we'd think about which stores had the stuff we were most interested in. We'd plot out in advance which order we'd hit the many stores we planned to visit. Our usual starting out time on Saturdays is 12 noon but on Boxing Day we'd start early, say 10:00, then take a break for lunch and then hit more stores. Way scaled back from years past and that's just fine.

Christmastide 2021/2022 - 7th Day of Christmas: Donna Summer

Friday, December 31, 2021

Today's the birthday of the great Donna Summer. I believe she would've been 73 today.

The Donna Summer Musical is currently playing at the Ordway in St. Paul through the weekend. I'd love to go see it but I don't think it'l work out time wise. I'm gonna regret missing it.

Hers is one of my all time favorite Christmas albums. I believe it came out just before Dale and I had our first Christmas together. I remember listening to it in our apartment on Fremont.

Rest well.
